In December 2005 my monthly visits to the Radio Cumbria studio began. What better way of expressing the fun and pleasure of a country walk than in enthusiastic conversation? Val Armstrong was my first convivial host, followed by stints with Martin Plenderleith and Paul Braithwaite, then for the next two years I shared the company of Ian Timms. When he was switched to drive time enter stage left Liz Rhodes and it is to her lively Mid-Morning Show that I wend my merry way.
Print-outs and galleries - For each walk I prepare a PDF, which can be downloaded, printed-off to actually take with you on the walk. This website also gives scope to show a range of images from the walk. The first year's walks also feature on the BBC Radio Cumbria website with extensive picture galleries. All the walks to twenty-seven were genuine fell-walks, mountain walking for hardier types. Henceforward look out for walks in your part of Cumbria - you never know when I'll come down your way!
I had a four-month break this summer (2008) caused by my need to concentrate on researching walks down in the Peak District. But October brought me gleeful back and with the break came the opportunity to change tack. My new brief to offer walks for all, lower-level off-the-fell rounds giving scope to discover and share with listeners a greater range of the beautiful countryside of Cumbria.
The intention henceforward is to visit the studio on the first Friday of each month thus giving listeners weekend walking ideas for the month ahead.
Consult the list below and then either click the name to elicit a downloadable PDF or click the drop-down tab (with the walks collated in batches of ten) to read up the walk, view images and download a PDF to print and take with you on your walk.
